The quick read
Why go
Jilin is the small one, and small is the pitch. A compact neighborhood food street near Houyi station, north of Kaohsiung Main Station, where the pan-fried soup dumplings alone justify the trip and nothing costs much of anything.
There is no shopping to speak of and no entertainment beyond watching the woks. That is the appeal. If the mega-markets exhaust you, Jilin is twenty relaxed minutes of very good, very cheap food among people who live around the corner.
