The quick read
Why go
Nanjichang is where Taipei people tell you to eat when you ask where they actually eat. No MRT station at the door, minimal English, zero tourist polish. What you get instead is one of the strongest concentrations of honest, inexpensive Taiwanese food in the city, including stalls with past Michelin Bib Gourmand recognition.
The sesame flatbread comes hot off a clay oven wall, the sesame oil chicken is winter fuel, and the prices feel like a different decade. This is the market for your second or third night, once you have seen the famous ones and want the version locals defend.
