The quick read
Why go
If you only have one night in Taipei, this is the market we send people to. Raohe is a single straight street, so you walk in one end by the Ciyou Temple gate, eat your way to the other end, and never once wonder if you missed the good section. That sounds like a small thing. After you have been lost inside Shilin for forty minutes, it is not.
The food holds up to the reputation. The black pepper buns near the temple entrance come out of a clay oven charred and dripping, and the herbal pork rib soup is the thing to order when the night turns cool. Come hungry, plan on eating standing up, and treat the temple next door as part of the visit, not scenery.
